Vector Maps

Vector maps inherent major advantages of flexibility, reduced file size and fast display comparing to raster maps. They are used in all mapping applications provided by AtlasCT.

The vector maps are downloaded to the client (desktop browser, mobile device, etc.) from a map server using streaming vector technology.

Vector map is based on vector data, it is preprocessed using proprietary algorithms for compression and decompression to furthermore reduce the size of the map and keep good visualization.

When using vector map the map style can be stored separately, it allows changing the style (colors, symbols, icons, etc.) instantly on client side without any assistance from server side. Changing map style in any competitive technology requires re-downloading all the map data.

A map downloaded from the map server is divided to equal squares called tiles.

Map tiles stored in vector format can contain additional information as meta-tags allowing application to display on the map enhanced information (text, photos, video, links). It contributes to user experience and to application usefulness.

Using vector maps improve user experience by enabling smooth panning and zooming.

By using the streaming vector technology, downloading the maps from the Internet can take 1/10 of the time required to download standard raster map images. The short download time of the vector maps increases significantly the overall application performance.

AtlasCT utilizes several types of vector data formats (among are SWF, SVG and AVS*) according to the application usage environment (web, mobile) and customer needs.
AtlasCT developed unique technologies (AtlasFLASH, AtlasSVG, and AtlasSVG Tiny) for converting GIS data to vector formats. These technologies enable displaying online interactive vector maps using Adobe Flash® Player or SVG Player over the Internet and mobile devices.

*AVS is a propriety vector data format, developed by AtlasCT for extreme performance and superior map visualization.
